An important solo exhibition by this Richmond-based artist which will feature major new works based on intrigue, imagery and symbolism in Tudor England.
Under the 118 year rule of the Tudor monarchy England flourished. Political revolution, religious reform and economic growth changed the social and cultural face of the country. Through a new found domestic peace the form and role of the country house evolved from one of defence into an expression of individual wealth and intellectual sophistication.
Spurred on by the rivalry of the Elizabethan court a widespread campaign of building ensued, the scale of which has never been seen since. William Harrison writing in 1577 captures a sense of the times when stating ‘Everie man almost is a builder…’ This was the great age of the country house, where woven into the fabric of the buildings were elaborate expressions of symbolism, allegory and fantasy unrivalled by anything to be found in Europe. This exhibition looks at a number of great Tudor buildings, both extant and lost, from the fanciful to the palatial, the sacred to the profane.
The private view will also include the first publication of the suite of four original screen prints by the artist which will be offered in a strictly limited edition. The exhibition will run from the 22nd of August to the 21st of September. For more information please contact us on 01765 602878, or e-mail: thegallery@hornseys.com
