Paula Rego: A Short Biography
Paula Rego was a Portuguese-British visual artist known for her powerful and provocative paintings and prints. Rego’s work is characterized by its narrative style, often drawing on folk tales, literature, and her personal experiences. Her art frequently explores themes of power, feminism, and family dynamics, often with a surreal and unsettling twist.
Early Life and Education
Born in Lisbon, Portugal, Rego was raised in a privileged yet strict household. She was sent to a finishing school in England, which she found repressive, but later attended the Slade School of Fine Art in London. Her time at Slade marked the beginning of her lifelong career in art.
Artistic Career
Rego’s early works were influenced by Surrealism, but she gradually developed a unique style that combined figuration with strong narrative elements. Her work gained international recognition in the 1980s, particularly after she became the first artist-in-residence at the National Gallery in London.
Major Works
Some of her most famous works include the series “The Maids”, “Dog Women”, and “The Abortion Series”. These works are noted for their exploration of gender roles, power dynamics, and the human condition, often conveyed through intense and sometimes disturbing imagery.
