Broome Hall Estate: A Brief Description:
Broome Hall Estate is a historic property located in Surrey, England, near the village of Coldharbour, in the district of Mole Valley. The estate is known for its grand country house, Broome Hall, which sits on a significant expanse of land, surrounded by the picturesque Surrey Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
The estate’s house was originally constructed in the mid-19th century, and over the years it has undergone various alterations and changes in ownership. Broome Hall is renowned for its Victorian architecture, with features like large bay windows, gabled roofs, and intricate detailing typical of the period. It has served as a private residence for various notable figures over time.
One of the estate’s famous residents was John le Carré, the celebrated author known for his spy novels, including The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Le Carré owned the property in the 1960s, and it is said that the estate provided inspiration for some of the settings in his novels.
In later years, Broome Hall became a focal point for various cultural and social activities, with its historical significance and stunning surroundings attracting attention. Its location in the Surrey Hills makes it a desirable spot, offering sweeping views of the countryside and easy access to walking trails and nature reserves. The estate has also been used as a filming location, taking advantage of its grandeur and scenic surroundings.
Today, Broome Hall Estate remains a symbol of the region’s rich history and natural beauty, blending its Victorian heritage with the charm of the rural English landscape.
Broome Hall Estate And Oliver Reed: A Brief Description:
Broome Hall is most notably associated with the legendary British actor Oliver Reed. It is said that Reed only bought the house in the because he was looking for a field for a horse he had bought from Johnny Kidd, the father of future supermodel Jodie Kidd, who ran a stud farm in Ewhurst. Reed, famous for his roles in films like Oliver!, Women in Love, and Gladiator, spent vast sums renovating it. Indeed, his naked wrestling scene with Alan Bates from Ken Bates’ ‘Women in Love’ was said to have been filmed there. He lived there during the height of his fame, and his time at the estate is often linked to his larger-than-life personality and notorious lifestyle. It is said that Reed was banned from his local pub there for descending a chimney naked and shouting out: ‘Ho! Ho! Ho! I’m Santa Claus.’ Reed’s tenure at Broome Hall became the stuff of legend, as he was known for his boisterous parties and love of entertaining. This large Victorian mansion in the Surrey Hills, served as the perfect backdrop for his extravagant lifestyle. Reed was frequently in the media for his wild behaviour, and the estate became something of a symbol of his rebellious, hard-drinking persona.
Despite the rambunctious reputation, Reed was known to have a deep affection for the property, finding solace in the countryside away from the public eye. The house, with its sprawling grounds and scenic views, provided him with both a retreat from his acting career and a place to indulge in his famous hospitality. Local stories often recall the many high-profile guests who visited Broome Hall and the wild parties that were held there. According to an estate agent’s negotiator, Reed buried the jewellery collection of a former girlfriend in the grounds where it still lies.
Broome Hall was Reed’s home until the mid-1980s when he decided to sell the property and relocate to Ireland. His association with Broome Hall is still remembered by many fans and locals, adding to the estate’s colourful history. Reed’s time at Broome Hall contributed to the mythos surrounding both the actor and the house itself, making it a point of interest for those fascinated by his life and career.
