Slow Going – Vietnamese Refugee Family Fleeing Suoi Cat, East of Saigon – Original Associated Press Radiophoto – 3 April 1975

Description

A compelling original Associated Press radiophoto showing a Vietnamese refugee family leaving Suoi Cat, a hamlet east of Saigon, during the rapid military collapse of South Vietnam in April 1975.

The family advances slowly along a broad roadway crowded with civilian and military traffic. At the centre, a barefoot woman carries a small child against her body while supporting another infant on her back. A young girl walks closely beside her, carrying a small bundle of possessions. Behind them, an injured or disabled man moves with the aid of a crutch. Their expressions, limited belongings and evident physical strain create a particularly affecting record of wartime displacement.

The contemporary Associated Press caption incorporated beneath the image is headed “SLOW GOING” and begins:

“SUOI CAT, VIETNAM, APRIL 3—A refugee family moves away from Suoi Cat, a hamlet east of Saigon…”

The remaining portion of the caption is partly faded and cut off at the lower edge, but records that the family had been forced to flee the renewed fighting. Only the clearly legible information has been used in this description.

The photograph was transmitted on 3 April 1975, during the final month of the Vietnam War. By early April, North Vietnamese forces had taken much of central South Vietnam and large numbers of soldiers and civilians were moving towards Saigon and the remaining government-held areas. Saigon fell to North Vietnamese forces on 30 April 1975, less than four weeks after this image was transmitted.

Suoi Cat lay east of the capital in the wider approach towards Xuân Lộc, an area that became strategically important as North Vietnamese forces closed upon Saigon. The photograph predates the principal Battle of Xuân Lộc, fought later in April, and records the growing civilian displacement that accompanied the approach of fighting towards the capital.

The image is particularly effective because it records neither combat nor political leadership, but the slow and difficult movement of an ordinary family. The mother carrying two young children, the barefoot girl and the man using a crutch provide a clear visual narrative of vulnerability, family responsibility and survival.

The transmission code across the upper margin identifies the photograph as an Associated Press image routed through Hong Kong and London for newspaper distribution. The reverse bears the Shields Gazette Library archive stamp, manuscript editorial measurements and a receiving or filing date of 11 April 1975. These features establish it as a genuine working newspaper photograph rather than a later reproduction.

Condition

Good condition for an original working press photograph. There is general age-related toning, light surface marking and normal newsroom handling wear. Several marginal creases are present, including short creases and small edge faults along the left side. A horizontal crease or pressure mark affects the right-hand area, with further slight corner and edge wear.

The transmitted caption beneath the image is faded and partly cropped at the lower edge but remains sufficiently legible to establish the title, date, location and principal subject. Contemporary black editorial borders and crop markings are present. The reverse displays light toning, newsroom annotations and the Shields Gazette Library archive stamp.

The principal image remains clear, strongly contrasted and emotionally compelling.

Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
