Picasso used a new technique of printing for this work that had been developed by Gunter Dietz. This involved a sort of silkscreen in three dimensions by which almost perfect replicas of Picasso’s original drawings could be made. The original drawings were in pencil, India ink, charcoal and coloured chalk. The Dietz process enabled these fine works from Picasso’s sketchbooks to be reproduced in their original size. Picasso personally participated in their production and design and wished them to represent ‘the confidences of an eighty-three years old man on the subject of desire and love'.
