Filippo Arena
Filippo Arena (1708–1789)
Filippo Arena was a Jesuit professor of mathematics and philosophy based in Palermo. His intellectual pursuits reflected a deep engagement with natural philosophy, particularly the interplay between science, aesthetics, and the living world. Among his most notable interests was the phenomenon of floral pollination by insects — an area he explored in La Natura e Coltura dei Fiori Fisicamente Esposta, a comprehensive botanical study published under the name of his nephew, Abbot Ignazio Arena.
This ambitious work was composed of three volumes. The first dealt with botany, offering detailed observations on the anatomy and fertilisation of flowers. The second and third volumes were devoted to horticulture, including an extensive sixty-page discourse on the principles and design of a flower garden.
The volumes also include a catalogue of “noble” species, with descriptive accounts of each flower illustrated in the sixty-five plates that accompany the text. These illustrations were developed in collaboration with Arena’s colleague, the painter Mario Cammerari. Many of the flower renderings were inspired by earlier botanical publications, most notably Johann Weinmann’s Phytanthoza Iconographia and G.B. Ferrari’s De Florum Cultura.
Arena’s work stands as a rich synthesis of empirical observation, classical scholarship, and visual artistry — a reflection of the Jesuit commitment to learning, refinement, and the cultivation of natural beauty.
