Steiff Bears

THE WORLD OF STEIFF

Few names in the history of soft toys command the international recognition and collector respect associated with Steiff. Founded in Germany in 1880 by Margarete Steiff, the company transformed the manufacture of plush animals through an uncompromising commitment to craftsmanship, innovation, and material quality. Today, Steiff remains one of the most important and widely collected names in twentieth-century toy production, with early bears, limited editions, and character models continuing to attract strong international demand among collectors.

Margarete Steiff’s story remains one of the most remarkable in nineteenth-century European entrepreneurship. Despite severe physical disability caused by childhood polio, she established a small sewing business in Giengen an der Brenz producing felt garments and domestic items. Her creation of a small felt elephant in 1880 — originally intended as a pincushion — unexpectedly became popular as a toy and marked the beginning of the Steiff company’s transition into soft toy manufacture.

The company’s defining innovation arrived in 1902, when Richard Steiff developed a jointed bear inspired by studies of live animals at Stuttgart Zoo. Introduced shortly afterwards at the Leipzig Toy Fair, the bear became one of the foundational models of the modern teddy bear phenomenon. By the early twentieth century, Steiff had established an international reputation for exceptional design, meticulous hand-finishing, and superior materials, standards that continue to define the company today.

Steiff’s famous “Button in Ear” trademark, introduced in 1904, became one of the earliest and most recognisable guarantees of authenticity in toy manufacturing. Original ear buttons, tags, chest tags, and production details now form an important part of the scholarly identification and dating of vintage Steiff animals, particularly for collectors seeking rare early or limited-edition examples.

At Hornseys, we maintain a carefully curated stock of both vintage and contemporary Steiff bears and animals, with a particular emphasis upon scarce limited editions, historically significant models, and collectible German-made examples. Our approach is grounded in careful research, condition assessment, and accurate cataloguing, with attention given to provenance, production details, labels, accessories, and overall originality.

Every Steiff bear offered by Hornseys is personally handled and catalogued by Helen Hornsey, who brings more than a decade of specialist experience in collectible bears and soft toys. Her expertise extends across Steiff, Merrythought, R. John Wright, Charlie Bears, and other important makers, with particular attention paid to condition, rarity, materials, and authenticity. Each item is photographed individually using high-resolution imagery intended to present an accurate and detailed representation of colour, texture, wear, and construction, allowing collectors to purchase with confidence.
