A highly distinctive Steiff interpretation of the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz, produced in 2015 as a limited edition of 1,939 pieces, the edition size chosen to commemorate the year of release of MGM’s celebrated 1939 film.

This is Steiff EAN 682940, one of the most imaginative designs in Steiff’s Wizard of Oz series. Rather than simply dressing a conventional teddy bear in costume, Steiff created the Tin Man in grey felt, using layered and shaped sections to suggest articulated metal armour while retaining the softness and craftsmanship associated with the company’s collector pieces.

The face is particularly effective, with vivid blue eyes, a dark embroidered nose and mouth, and carefully placed seams that reinforce the impression of a constructed metal figure. The familiar funnel-shaped hat, high collar, layered shoulder pieces, wrist bands and knee detailing all contribute to the characterful mechanical appearance.

A particularly attractive feature is the original red heart-shaped pendant watch, suspended from a chain at the chest. This directly references the Tin Man’s famous search for a heart and forms an important part of the original Steiff design.

This example is individually numbered 527 of 1,939 and retains its original Steiff white limited-edition ear label, gold-plated Button in Ear and original swing labels.

It is also accompanied by its original Steiff presentation box, numbered certificate, associated paperwork and watch user manual, making it a pleasingly complete collector’s example.

The Tin Man remains one of the most recognisable characters from The Wizard of Oz, and this Steiff edition has particular crossover appeal to collectors of Steiff, classic film memorabilia and licensed character toys.

Excellent collectible condition.

The grey felt remains clean and well preserved, with the layered armour-style detailing, funnel hat, decorative fittings and original heart-shaped watch all present.

The bear retains its original Steiff white ear label, gold-plated Button in Ear and swing labels.

Accompanied by the original presentation box, numbered certificate, paperwork and watch user manual. The box shows only light signs of storage and handling consistent with age.
