The Race Courses of Great Britain and Ireland: Royal Ascot Heath
Bayles, F. H. & The Hannibal Press

Edition of 95, numbered in pencil to the margin. Blind-embossed stamp of The Hannibal Press. Queen Anne first proposed that a horse racing course be constructed on the demesne of Royal Ascot Heath in 1711. The number of race days expanded, and in 1828 King George IV established the Royal Procession. Royal interest remained influential, and by 1902 Ascot was in splendid condition, becoming one of the best gallops in existence. With notable races throughout the year, including flat races, steeplechases, and hurdling, Royal Ascot is Britain’s most valuable race meeting.

The Race Courses of Great Britain and Ireland: Ripon

Ripon hosted the first race exclusively for lady riders. The current location on Boroughbridge Road has been used since 1900, with the course standing 100 feet above sea level. The right-handed course is one mile and three-quarters in circumference with two turns. It is known for its good gallop on the far side for half a mile.

The Race Courses of Great Britain and Ireland: (Aintree) Liverpool Grand National Steeple Chase Course and Flat Course
Bayles, F. H. & The Hannibal Press
Price: £165.00
Published by The Hannibal Press, UK. Date: 2022. Sheet size: 84.1cm x 68.6cm with good margins. Fine quality digital print on 310gsm Canson Edition Etching paper. Edition of 95, numbered in pencil to the margin. Blind-embossed stamp of The Hannibal Press. This district is the birthplace of steeplechasing, with records dating back to the Norman Conquest. The Liverpool races began at Maghull in 1827, leading to the present venue at Aintree. The Grand Stand was completed in 1830, and in 1839 ‘Lottery’ won the first ‘Grand Liverpool Steeplechase,’ now known as ‘The Grand National.’ The distance was 4 miles 856 yards, requiring two complete circuits, excluding the water jump and the formidable fence preceding it. ‘Becher’s Brook’ and ‘Valentine’s Brook’ were also highly challenging. The Grand National remains a highlight of the horse-racing calendar.
