A large and impressive Steiff Leo The 1912 Titanic Mourning Bear, reference 662775, made in 2007 exclusively for Danbury Mint. This substantial collector’s bear measures approximately 60 cm and was issued in a limited edition of 1,000 pieces. This example is numbered 249 / 1000.

Leo is made in long black mohair, deliberately echoing the famous Steiff black “mourning bears” associated with the aftermath of the Titanic disaster in 1912. The bear has black eyes, a black stitched nose and mouth, beige felt paw pads, Steiff button and ear tag, chest medallion and attached Steiff swing tag. He is fully jointed with moveable head, arms and legs and fitted with a working growler.

The original 1912 black Steiff mourning bears are among the most historically resonant and desirable of all Steiff teddy bears, produced for the British market after the sinking of the Titanic. This Danbury Mint exclusive is a modern commemorative interpretation of that important Steiff collecting subject, combining large scale, strong visual impact and a particularly evocative Titanic theme.

Condition: Very good condition overall. The black mohair presents well, with good colour and texture. The bear retains the Steiff button and ear tag, chest medallion and swing tag.
