A large and impressive Steiff Appolonia teddy bear, reference 667633, made in 2004 as a limited edition of 1,500 pieces. This example is numbered 01087 and is accompanied by its original certificate and Toy Shoppe cloth bag.

Appolonia measures 28 inches and is made in sandy-coloured pure mohair, with a soft feminine muzzle, brown stitched nose, black eyes, felt paw pads and fully jointed limbs. She wears a delicate lace collar and pendant portrait, presented as a companion to Maximilian and named after Appolonia Margarete Steiff, the founder of Margarete Steiff GmbH.

The certificate describes Appolonia as the second in a series of Teddy bear exclusives created especially for The Toy Shoppe. Her design is based on a Steiff teddy bear first designed in 1905, giving her an attractive historical reference within Steiff’s own production tradition. She was also issued during the centenary period of Steiff’s famous “Button in Ear” trademark and wears a gold-plated elephant button in honour of that anniversary.

A substantial modern Steiff collector’s bear, with strong display presence, desirable large size, limited-edition status, certificate and original Toy Shoppe bag.

Condition: Excellent condition overall. The mohair is clean, bright and well presented, with strong curl and good colour. The felt paw pads, stitched nose and mouth, lace collar and pendant are all in good order. The Steiff button and ear tag are present. The original certificate is included and remains clean and readable. The original Toy Shoppe cloth bag is present, with some age-related grubbiness and handling marks. It remains a desirable original accompaniment but should be regarded as lightly marked rather than pristine.
