Steiff – EAN 406102 – British Collector’s 1907 Replica Teddy Bear – 1989 – Limited Edition

A large and impressive Steiff British Collector’s 1907 Replica Teddy Bear, reference 406102 (0174/61), issued as a limited edition of 2,000 pieces. This example is numbered 01392 and is accompanied by its certificate and original box.

The bear measures approximately 61 cm and is made in blonde mohair, with a traditionally styled early twentieth-century appearance inspired by Steiff’s classic pre-war teddy bears. He has black eyes, a hand-stitched brown nose and mouth, long limbs, felt paw pads and pronounced humped back styling. He is fully jointed and retains a working growler.

This was the first bear in Steiff’s British Collector’s series, produced specifically for the United Kingdom collector market. The certificate notes the historic importance of Richard Steiff’s early jointed teddy bear design and presents this edition as a faithful collector’s replica of the original early Steiff bear generation. Its large size, mohair construction, excelsior filling, working growler, certificate and original box make it a substantial and highly displayable collector’s bear.

Condition

The bear is in excellent condition overall, with clean blonde mohair, good colour and strong presentation. The felt paw pads are clean and well preserved, and the stitched nose, mouth and claw detail are in good order. The Steiff ear tag is present, and the growler is working. The original certificate is included.

The original box is present but worn, with age-related storage wear and the plastic lid has cracks and tears. The box remains an important original accompaniment but should be regarded as worn rather than fine. We can provide further photographs if required.
