Alpha Farnell Replica Teddy Bear: A Brief Description

The XAB20N teddy bear is a replica based on the famous Alpha Farnell design as featured in the Sue Pearson book “Bears”. The worlds oldest name in Teddy Bears is probably that of “Alpha” Farnell. The original company was founded in the mid 19^th Century and it is said that soft toy production started as early as 1897. One of the first links between “Alpha” Farnell and Merrythought Limited was established in 1930 when the Sales Director for J. K. Farnell was appointed as Sales Director of the newly formed Merrythought company.

Materials and Craftsmanship

This teddy bear is fully jointed and made from parchment coloured mohair, in keeping with traditional materials for high-quality collectible teddy bears. Mohair gives a slight sheen, a tactile softness, and a somewhat dense plush, while also showing natural variation in pile with age. The stuffing is firm but intended to allow the bear to sit or stand with support. The paw pads are made from felt and the claws are hand stitched in a contrasting colour.

The face is modelled on the characteristic Farnell “pointed muzzle” style: the muzzle projects a little, with stitching to define the nose and mouth in the same colour as the claws. The eyes are typically glass-type, high-quality safety eyes set into the face at a modest height, giving the bear a thoughtful, rather dignified expression. The ears are slightly cupped and evenly set. The colour of the mohair of this replica is parchment, approximating the look of aged or original Farnell bears.
