Ripon In North Yorkshire: A Brief History

Ripon is one of England’s oldest and smallest cities, with a history that stretches back more than 1,300 years. To this day, the tradition of the Wakeman’s Horn is upheld every evening at 9 p.m. in the Market Square, marking the continuity of this uniquely local custom.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Ripon remained a stable and active market centre, while also developing a reputation for education and political representation. It was granted parliamentary status early in the modern era and was once represented by figures of national influence. The Industrial Revolution had a limited but noticeable effect, with small-scale industry, printing, and milling complementing the area’s strong agricultural base.

Ripon’s character in the 20th century was shaped by both world wars, with the city serving as a training ground for troops and experiencing the social changes that followed. Despite the pressures of modernisation, Ripon retained much of its historic charm, with conservation efforts preserving its architecture, street patterns, and green spaces.
