Historical Context: Flat, steeple-chases and hurdle-races all took place at Haydock Park. Situated within easy distance of Liverpool and Manchester, it was also on the Grand Central, London and North Western and Great Northern railways. The running line is left-handed with the going very much on the rise at the finish. Both curves are gallopable at full speed and the entire distance round being 1 mile, four furlongs and 190 yards. The going is good, even in foul weather due to the clay pipe drainage and new red sand and marl soil. Haydock Park remains one of Britain’s most used race courses with racing held on 32 days of the year.
