Description: This fine map, “The Race Courses Of Great Britain And Ireland: The Curragh,” published by The Hannibal Press in 2022, captures the rich history and unique layout of the Curragh racecourse. It has been edited and re-coloured after the original lithographed map by F. H. Bayles. Printed on high-quality 310gsm Canson Edition Etching paper, this limited edition map (only 95 copies, each numbered in pencil) features the blind-embossed stamp of The Hannibal Press.
Historical Context:
Racing has been held at Curragh Camp since 1741. The programme is varied and valuable stakes are competed for including The Irish Derby. An important feature is the Madrid mile line, which is, but for a very slight curve about two furlongs from the start, a straight mile. The Peel Course offers a rattling good gallop. Overall, from a racing point of view, stamina and fitness are indispensable at the Curragh as it is one of the most demanding racecourses. The excellence of the turf does however go some way to compensate for the severity of the gallops.
