Description:

The Griffon Vulture, also known as Vulture fulvus, is a large bird of prey native to mountainous and hilly regions of Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia. It has a robust body, broad wings, and a wingspan that can reach up to 9 feet. The plumage is mostly pale brown with a lighter head and neck, which are covered in fine, downy feathers. The Griffon Vulture is a scavenger, primarily feeding on the carcasses of dead animals, which it locates using its keen eyesight. It often soars high on thermal currents, traveling long distances in search of food. This social bird is known for nesting in colonies on cliff faces, where it lays one egg per breeding season. The Griffon Vulture plays a vital ecological role in its habitat by helping to dispose of carrion and preventing the spread of disease.

This is an exquisite original hand-coloured lithograph from John and Elizabeth Gould’s magnificent work, ‘The Birds of Europe,’ produced between 1832 and 1837. He and his wife, Elizabeth Gould, worked closely together to produce some of the most comprehensive and stunning ornithological works of the 19th century. Elizabeth, an accomplished artist, transferred many of John’s sketches into the lithographic prints that were then hand-coloured under her supervision.
