JOHN GOULD ORIGINAL HAND-COLOURED LITHOGRAPHS
Hornseys is pleased to offer an important and carefully curated selection of original John Gould hand-coloured lithographs, with particular emphasis upon plates from the monumental Birds of Europe and related nineteenth-century ornithological works. Combining scientific precision with extraordinary visual beauty, Gould’s publications remain among the finest achievements of Victorian natural history illustration and continue to occupy a central position in the history of colour-plate books.
Founded in 1976 and based in the Yorkshire Dales, Hornseys has developed a growing reputation for historically informed cataloguing, rigorous provenance research, and carefully selected material across the fields of natural history, manuscripts, rare books, and historical ephemera. Our Gould material is catalogued not simply as decorative art, but within its wider artistic, scientific, and bibliographical context.
THE IMPORTANCE OF JOHN GOULD
John Gould (1804–1881) was one of the most influential ornithological publishers of the nineteenth century. Working alongside his wife Elizabeth Gould, Edward Lear, H. C. Richter, and other major natural history artists of the period, Gould produced some of the most ambitious illustrated bird books ever published. His works documented species from Europe, Australia, Asia, and the Americas with a level of accuracy and aesthetic sophistication that transformed Victorian ornithology.
Elizabeth Gould’s contribution was particularly significant. Many of the earliest and most admired plates were drawn directly by her before being transferred to stone and delicately hand-coloured. Edward Lear, later celebrated for his literary nonsense works, also contributed a number of remarkable early lithographs distinguished by their elegance and technical brilliance.
THE BIRDS OF EUROPE
Published between 1832 and 1837, The Birds of Europe established Gould’s international reputation and remains one of the defining monuments of nineteenth-century ornithological publishing. Issued across five folio volumes, the work contains more than 400 hand-coloured lithographic plates depicting European bird species with remarkable vitality and precision.
Original plates from the work are highly sought after not only for their decorative appeal, but also for their significance within the history of science, printmaking, and natural history illustration. Strong impressions with fresh contemporary hand-colouring remain increasingly difficult to source in fine condition.
