The Black-Winged Kite: A Short Description
The Black-winged Kite (Elanus caeruleus, sometimes referred to as Elanus melanopterus in older classifications) is a small raptor belonging to the family Accipitridae. This bird is known for its striking appearance and graceful hunting behaviour. Here’s a detailed description:
Physical Appearance:
- Size: The black-winged kite is a small raptor, measuring about 30–35 cm (12–14 inches) in length with a wingspan of approximately 80–95 cm (31–37 inches). It typically weighs between 200 to 300 grams (7 to 10 ounces).
- Plumage:
- The overall plumage is pale gray, with a distinctive combination of black and white markings.
- The upperparts are light gray, while the underparts are white.
- The bird has prominent black markings on its shoulders (hence the name “black-winged”) and primary flight feathers, which are easily visible when in flight.
- The head is white with a short, hooked beak. The eyes are strikingly red, giving the bird a fierce expression.
- Juveniles:
- Juvenile black-winged kites have a more brownish or buff-coloured plumage with streaking on the head and underparts. The eyes are yellow rather than red, and the black shoulder markings are less defined.
Habitat:
- The black-winged kite is found in a variety of open habitats, including savannas, grasslands, farmlands, and sometimes even in suburban areas. It prefers areas with scattered trees or bushes that provide good vantage points for hunting.
- This species is widespread, being found across sub-Saharan Africa, South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and parts of southern Europe. It has also been expanding its range in some areas.
Behaviour:
- Hunting: The black-winged kite is known for its unique hunting behaviour, often seen hovering or “kiting” in one spot high above the ground before diving onto its prey.
- It primarily feeds on small mammals like rodents, which make up the bulk of its diet. It will also hunt birds, large insects, and reptiles.
- The bird’s hunting style is efficient and graceful, using its excellent eyesight to spot prey from a distance.
- Breeding:
- Black-winged kites are monogamous, typically breeding once or twice a year depending on food availability.
- They build a small nest of sticks and leaves in trees or bushes, where the female lays 3 to 4 eggs.
- Both parents participate in feeding and caring for the chicks, which fledge after about 4 to 5 weeks.
Conservation Status:
- The black-winged kite is currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.
- It is not considered to be at risk due to its wide distribution and adaptability to various habitats. In fact, in some areas, populations are increasing, partly due to the availability of agricultural lands that provide ample hunting opportunities.
Distribution:
- Africa: Found throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
- Asia: Widespread in South Asia, including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia.
- Europe: Occasionally found in southern Europe, particularly in Spain and Portugal.
Vocalisation:
- The black-winged kite is relatively quiet compared to other raptors, but during the breeding season or when alarmed, it may produce a series of high-pitched whistles or calls.
The black-winged kite is a fascinating bird, known for its elegant flight and hunting prowess. Its ability to adapt to various environments and its expanding range make it a success story among birds of prey.
