Description:

The Dunlin, also known as the Purre (Tringa variabilis), is a small, stout shorebird recognized for its distinctive seasonal plumage and active foraging behavioUr. In breeding plumage, it features a striking black belly, reddish-brown back, and streaked head and chest, while in non-breeding plumage, it is more uniformly greyish-brown. It has a slightly downcurved black bill and black legs. The Dunlin breeds in Arctic and sub-Arctic regions and migrates to temperate and tropical coasts worldwide during the winter. It feeds on insects, crustaceans, and molluscs, often seen probing mudflats and sandy shores with its bill. The Dunlin’s adaptability to different habitats and its widespread presence make it a well-known and easily recognisable shorebird.

This is an exquisite original hand-coloured lithograph from John and Elizabeth Gould’s magnificent work, ‘The Birds of Europe,’ produced between 1832 and 1837.
