Shirley and Eddie Clarkson were the founders of Gabrielle Designs, a British company best known for creating the first licensed Paddington Bear soft toys. The venture began in the early 1970s in Doncaster, England, when Shirley, inspired by Michael Bond’s stories, crafted a Paddington Bear as a Christmas gift for her children, Joanna and Jeremy Clarkson (who would later become a well-known television presenter). The bear received widespread admiration, prompting the Clarksons to establish Gabrielle Designs in 1972 to produce and sell Paddington Bear toys commercially.

The company’s Paddington Bears were distinctive for their high-quality, handmade craftsmanship. Each bear was dressed in a duffle coat and, notably, Wellington boots—a design choice that not only added charm but also helped the bears stand upright. Initially, the boots were sourced from Dunlop, but as demand increased, Gabrielle Designs began manufacturing their own, complete with paw prints moulded into the soles.

Gabrielle Designs operated until 1997, during which time their Paddington Bears became cherished collectibles. The early models, especially those in good condition with original clothing and tags, are particularly sought after by collectors today. The company’s commitment to quality and attention to detail played a significant role in popularising Paddington Bear as a beloved character in British culture.

In addition to Paddington Bears, Gabrielle Designs produced a range of other products, including tea cosies, aprons, draught excluders, and lampshades. The company was named after Shirley’s middle name, ‘Gabrielle’. The success of Gabrielle Designs had a significant impact on the Clarkson family, providing the means to support their children’s education and future careers.

Shirley Clarkson later chronicled the journey of Gabrielle Designs in her book, “Bearly Believable: My Part in the Paddington Bear Story,” offering insights into the company’s rise and the challenges faced along the way.
