Published by Hutchinson, London, UK, 1946. First edition. Original cloth gilt. Dustwrapper. Size: 16.5cm x 23.9cm. pp. 259. Mountevans was second in command on Scott’s last great expedition to the South Pole and had a distinguished naval career, becoming known as ‘Evans of the Broke’. In his later career he was Commander-in-chief of the Royal Australian Navy, the Africa Station and The Nore. During World War II he became the London Regional Commissioner for Civil Defence. Illustrated throughout with photographs. Inscribed by the author to Elizabeth Ward, the secretary to Edwina Mountbatten: ‘To our dearest Elizabeth, With Best Xmas Wishes from Teddy & Elsa, 1946’. A near fine, tight, bright, clean copy in very good indeed, bright, clean, fragile dustwrapper which is slightly nicked and rubbed with a couple of closed tears. Scarce in the first edition in dustwrapper and exceptionally scarce inscribed.
