Product Description

Beswick Beatrix Potter – Old Mr Pricklepin Figurine – c.1983-1985

Description

An original Beswick figure depicting Old Mr Pricklepin, the hedgehog character from Beatrix Potter’s The Tale of Ginger and Pickles, produced under licence from Frederick Warne.

The figure shows Old Mr Pricklepin seated upright on a naturalistic grassy base, holding an open blue-edged book across his lap. His rounded body is carefully modelled with dense incised and painted spine detail, while the face, paws and book are picked out with the restrained naturalistic colouring characteristic of Beswick’s later Beatrix Potter production.

The model was designed by David Lyttleton and introduced by Beswick in 1983. Production continued into the later 1980s, with different backstamps used during the model’s relatively short period of manufacture.

The underside of this example carries the brown printed inscription:

“BEATRIX POTTER’S
‘Old Mr Pricklepin’
© Frederick Warne P.L.C. 1983
BESWICK ENGLAND”

The printed 1983 date records the copyright and introduction of the design rather than necessarily identifying the precise year in which this individual figure left the factory.

Old Mr Pricklepin is one of the less frequently encountered later Beswick Beatrix Potter figures and is particularly appealing for its compact scale, detailed modelling and distinctive hedgehog subject.

Condition

Very good condition. No obvious chips, cracks or restoration visible from inspection. There is some light expected rubbing and marking to the underside of the base consistent with age and previous display. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
