A Brief History of Borough Market
Borough Market, located in Southwark, London, is one of the oldest and most renowned food markets in the city. Its origins can be traced back to at least the 12th century, making it a historic cornerstone of London’s culinary landscape. The market has evolved significantly over the centuries, adapting to the changing needs of the city while maintaining its charm and authenticity.
Initially, Borough Market served as a vital trading hub for the local community, providing fresh produce, meat, and fish to the residents of Southwark and beyond. In 1756, the market was moved from its original location on Borough High Street to its current site on Stoney Street to alleviate traffic congestion. This relocation marked the beginning of Borough Market as we know it today.
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Borough Market continued to thrive, becoming a focal point for wholesale trade. However, by the mid-20th century, the market faced challenges due to the rise of supermarkets and changes in shopping habits. Despite these challenges, Borough Market persevered, and a revival began in the 1990s, shifting its focus towards retail and speciality foods.
Today, Borough Market is a bustling, vibrant destination attracting both locals and tourists. It is renowned for its wide array of high-quality products, including fresh produce, artisanal goods, gourmet foods, and international delicacies. The market is home to a diverse community of traders, each dedicated to their craft and committed to offering exceptional products.
Borough Market is not just a place to shop; it is a cultural and culinary experience. The market hosts various events, cooking demonstrations, and workshops, fostering a deep appreciation for food and its provenance. It has become a symbol of London’s rich food heritage, blending tradition with innovation.
As one of London’s most beloved markets, Borough Market continues to be a testament to the city’s enduring love for quality food and community. Its historic arches and vibrant atmosphere make it a must-visit destination for food enthusiasts from around the world.
WORKS AND TECHNIQUES BY MICHAEL KIRKMAN IN OUR CATALOGUE
Michael Kirkman’s art is distinguished by his expertise in linocut and lithography, with a particular focus on the rich textures and unique character these techniques offer. Linocut, a relief printing technique, involves carving a design into a linoleum surface, applying ink, and pressing it onto paper to create striking, bold images. This method allows for the creation of distinct and vibrant prints, each showcasing Kirkman’s meticulous attention to detail and composition.
In addition to linocut, Kirkman has also mastered lithography at the renowned Curwen Studio. Lithography is a technique where the artist draws directly onto a limestone or metal plate with a grease-based medium. The plate is then treated to retain the drawn image, allowing for a wide range of tones and intricate detailing in the final print. Kirkman’s lithographs are celebrated for their depth, texture, and expressive quality, capturing the essence of his subjects with nuance and sensitivity.
