CANNING, Lady Charlotte (1817–1861). Autograph Letter Signed (“C. Canning”) to Mr Bowring. Simla, 20 May 1860.

Autograph letter signed, “C. Canning”, written from Simla on 20 May 1860, four pages on a single folded sheet, addressed to “Dear Mr Bowring”. An engaging and historically informative letter combining personal news, observations on life in the Himalayan summer capital of British India, and several revealing references to contemporary political affairs during the early years of the Raj.

Lady Canning opens by thanking Bowring for “two bulletins of the journey”, expressing relief that the traveller’s progress had gone well and hoping to receive confirmation of its successful conclusion. She remarks upon the exceptionally poor weather at Simla, noting that since Bowring’s departure there had been little except storms and rain, with only two genuinely fine days. She enquires after Mrs Bowring and their young daughter and comments upon the prevalence of illness among residents of the station.

Particularly interesting are several references to current affairs. Lady Canning notes the lack of reliable news reaching Simla, mentions reports of speech translations being “called in”, and writes:

“I want very much to hear the truth of the extraordinary outrage at Mauree in which a European in office is said to have been flogged by natives.”

The place referred to is almost certainly Murree (now in Pakistan), then one of the principal hill stations of British India and the summer headquarters of the Punjab administration. The incident was evidently attracting attention within official circles.

She further observes:

“Mr Barnes is going to one of the little hill states close by to settle its political turmoils.”

This brief but revealing passage appears to refer to contemporary political difficulties in one of the neighbouring Himalayan hill states surrounding Simla and offers a glimpse of the administrative concerns circulating within British India’s governing elite.

The letter concludes with more domestic reflections, including remarks on Bowring’s garden and flourishing geraniums, before conveying thanks to “Dr Beale” for his “two letters and excellent reports” and sending warm regards to Mrs Bowring.

Charlotte Canning, Countess Canning, was the wife of Charles Canning, 1st Earl Canning, Governor-General and first Viceroy of India. As the wife of the first Viceroy she became the first Vicereine of India. One of the most perceptive observers of nineteenth-century India, she is remembered for her correspondence, journals, photography, botanical studies and watercolours produced during her years in the subcontinent. Her letters constitute important primary-source material for the social and political history of the British Raj.

Single folded sheet, written on four pages.

Page size: 20.4 × 13.1 cm.

Condition: Very good. Folded as sent, with light creasing, minor age toning and gentle handling wear. Ink clear and legible throughout.

Institutional holdings of Lady Canning correspondence are preserved at the British Library, Bodleian Libraries, National Library of Scotland and other major repositories. No record of this specific letter has been located. Apparently unrecorded.

A scarce and appealing Lady Canning manuscript combining personal correspondence with references to Murree, Simla society, illness in the hill stations, and political affairs in the neighbouring Himalayan states during the formative years of the British Raj.
