Fair Isle And Its Puffins: A Brief History

Fair Isle is a small island located in the Shetland Islands of Scotland, and it is renowned for its significant population of Atlantic puffins (Fratercula arctica). These seabirds are one of the most beloved and recognizable bird species in the UK, largely due to their distinctive appearance and charismatic behaviour.

Key Facts about Fair Isle Puffins:

  1. Population: Fair Isle is one of the most important breeding sites for puffins in the UK. During the breeding season, the island hosts tens of thousands of puffins, making it a key location for anyone interested in observing these birds.
  2. Breeding Season: Puffins typically arrive on Fair Isle in late April or early May and stay until late July or early August. During this period, they nest in burrows along the cliffs and grassy slopes of the island.
  3. Nesting Habits: Puffins dig burrows in the soft earth, often reusing the same burrow year after year. Inside, they lay a single egg, which both parents take turns incubating. Once the chick hatches, it is fed by both parents until it is ready to fledge.
  4. Appearance and Behaviour: Puffins are known for their colourful beaks, which are bright orange with blue and yellow accents during the breeding season. They have black upperparts and white underparts, with a comical, almost clown-like face. Puffins are also excellent swimmers and can dive to great depths to catch small fish, their primary food source.
  5. Conservation: The puffin population on Fair Isle, like elsewhere, is affected by changes in the marine environment, particularly related to the availability of their prey, such as sand eels. Conservation efforts focus on monitoring population trends and protecting their breeding habitats.
  6. Visiting Fair Isle: For birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, Fair Isle is a prime destination. The island is remote, accessible by ferry or small plane, and is home to a renowned bird observatory, which offers accommodations and guided tours. Visitors during the summer months can experience the spectacle of thousands of puffins returning to their nests each evening.
  7. Cultural Significance: Puffins are a symbol of Fair Isle, and they hold a special place in the hearts of both locals and visitors. The island’s connection to these birds is celebrated in local arts, crafts, and tourism.

Observing Puffins on Fair Isle:

The best time to observe puffins on Fair Isle is during their breeding season from May to July. Visitors should be prepared for the island’s rugged conditions but will be rewarded with stunning views of puffins up close, especially around the island’s cliffs and coastal areas.

Fair Isle’s puffins not only contribute to the island’s rich biodiversity but also play a crucial role in the cultural and ecological identity of this unique location.
