Jonny Hannah – Greetings From Darktown – An Illustrator’s Miscellany – First Edition – 2014
Description
Published by Merrell in 2014, Greetings from Darktown: An Illustrator’s Miscellany is a substantial and extensively illustrated survey of the work of British artist and illustrator Jonny Hannah.
The book provides an immersive introduction to Hannah’s highly distinctive creative world, bringing together paintings, prints, hand lettering, commercial illustration, design work, commissions and personal projects. His imagery draws upon folk art, jazz, popular music, vintage advertising, seaside culture, independent shops, tattoo design and the graphic traditions of record sleeves, posters and hand-painted signs.
Darktown is central to Hannah’s artistic identity: an imagined place populated by musicians, shopkeepers, sailors, performers, artists and eccentric local characters. Throughout the book, this fictional world is explored through reproductions of original artwork, sketchbook material, printed ephemera and accounts of selected projects.
The publication includes discussion of work undertaken with St Jude’s, The Coningsby Gallery and Hornseys’ gallery in Ripon, documenting significant collaborations and exhibitions within Hannah’s career.
Illustrated throughout in colour, the book is both a visual monograph and a highly personal artistic miscellany. It offers valuable insight into Hannah’s working methods, recurring influences and approach to combining fine art, illustration, typography and design.
