Product Description
Original copper engraving. Date: c.1640. Latin text verso. Sheet size: 67.7cm x 52.4cm. Map size: 50.3cm x 41.2cm. An excellent 17th century map of the East Indies covering from India to New Guinea and including China, Tibet and Japan which is shown as horizontal. The map centres on and around the Spice Islands and the influence of the Dutch East India Company there. It includes numerous rhumb lines, a decorative mileage scale, a decorative text box, ships, a sea monster off the coast of Ceilon (Ceylon) and a decorative cartouche. Good, wide margins with only very minor wear to the edges and only very minor evidence of an old mount. Later but not modern hand-colouring. Central fold-line as issued. Old tabs to the upper and lower margins. Map very clean indeed. Overall a fine, bright, copy with lovely hand-colouring. Scarce, especially in this condition.
