A Short Biography Of Louis Van Houtte
Louis Benoît Van Houtte (1810-1876) was a notable Belgian horticulturist and botanist renowned for his contributions to the field of botany and the development of horticulture in Belgium. Born on June 29, 1810, in Ypres, Belgium, Van Houtte initially pursued studies in classical literature but soon turned his attention to botany, influenced by his passion for plants and nature.
In the early 1830s, Van Houtte worked as a botanical assistant at the botanical garden in Brussels. His career took a significant turn when he travelled to Brazil from 1834 to 1836 to collect plants. The specimens he brought back to Europe enriched botanical gardens and private collections, solidifying his reputation as a skilled plant collector.
In 1839, Van Houtte founded the renowned horticultural establishment, Établissements Louis Van Houtte, in Ghent. This nursery became one of the largest and most prestigious in Europe, known for its extensive collection of exotic and rare plants. Van Houtte’s contributions to horticulture included the publication of “Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l’Europe,” a comprehensive and beautifully illustrated botanical periodical that disseminated knowledge about new plant species and horticultural practices.
