The wild boar (Sus scrofa) is a robust and adaptable mammal that once roamed freely across the British Isles. Although native to Britain, it became extinct in the wild several centuries ago due to overhunting and habitat loss. In recent decades, reintroduced populations, often originating from escaped farmed boar, have established themselves in parts of the country, particularly in woodlands and rural areas.

Physical Characteristics

Wild boars are medium-sized animals with a strong, muscular build and a distinctive bristled coat that varies in colour from dark brown to greyish-black. Adults typically measure 90 to 150cm in length and stand around 60 to 90cm at the shoulder. Males, or boars, are larger than females, or sows, and can weigh between 50 and 150 kilograms, depending on their habitat and diet.

A notable feature of the wild boar is its elongated snout, which is used for rooting in soil in search of food. Males also develop prominent tusks—enlarged canine teeth—that curve outward and are used for defence and display during mating season. Their sharp senses of smell and hearing make them highly adept at detecting predators and food sources.

Habitat and Behaviour

Wild boars are highly adaptable and thrive in a variety of habitats, including deciduous and mixed woodlands, grasslands, and agricultural areas. They are primarily nocturnal, becoming more active at dusk and during the night. Social animals, they live in groups known as sounders, typically composed of females and their offspring, while adult males are more solitary, joining the group only during the breeding season.

Diet

Omnivorous by nature, wild boars have a diverse diet that includes roots, tubers, acorns, berries, insects, small mammals, and carrion. Their foraging habits play an important ecological role, as their rooting behaviour aerates soil and aids seed dispersal. However, in agricultural areas, their feeding can cause significant damage to crops, making them a challenge for farmers.

Breeding and Lifecycle

Breeding occurs mainly in late autumn and winter, with sows giving birth to litters of 4 to 6 piglets after a gestation period of around 115 days. Piglets are easily recognisable by their striped coats, which provide camouflage in woodland environments. These stripes fade as the young grow, with full maturity reached at 2 to 3 years.

The resurgence of wild boar in Britain has sparked both interest and controversy. While their return has been celebrated by conservationists for restoring a native species and adding to biodiversity, their presence can also lead to conflicts.
