The composition moves between compact coastal settlements and more open stretches of landscape. Rows of houses, larger civic or industrial buildings, quays and harbour-side structures rise across the hills, creating the impression of a town that has developed organically around the water. Small sailing boats, rowing boats and other vessels animate the foreground and reinforce the maritime character of the design.

Flowing, interlaced lines suggest waves, currents and tidal movement across the lower section of the shade. Beyond the water, bands of land rise towards groups of buildings, scattered trees and distant hills beneath a sky filled with expressive cloud formations. The changing scale of the architecture and landscape creates a convincing sense of depth within the continuous composition.
