Milan-San Remo: A Short Description

The Milan-San Remo is one of the most prestigious and longest-running one-day professional cycling races in the world. It is often referred to as “La Classicissima” or “La Primavera” due to its early-season timing and its status as a monument of cycling. First held in 1907, the race is part of the UCI World Tour and is the longest one-day race in professional cycling, typically covering a distance of around 290 kilometres (180 miles).

Key Features of the Race:

  • Date and Timing: The race is traditionally held in mid-March, marking the start of the spring Classics season.
  • Starting Point: As the name suggests, the race begins in Milan, Italy.
  • Route: It follows a route that takes the riders south from Milan through the plains of Lombardy and Piedmont before reaching the Ligurian coast. The final kilometres run along the coast toward San Remo.
  • Distance: The race covers around 291 kilometres, making it the longest professional one-day race.

Climbs:

Despite being one of the “easier” monument races in terms of climbing, it has a few crucial hills toward the end:

  • Cipressa (22 km from the finish): A 5.6 km climb at an average gradient of 4.1%.
  • Poggio di San Remo (9 km from the finish): This climb is just under 4 km long with an average gradient of about 3.7%. It is not exceptionally steep, but its placement close to the finish often makes it decisive.

Race Dynamics:

  • Tactics: The Milan-San Remo race often ends in a sprint, but its length and the climbs near the end of the route mean that strong riders and attackers can make a decisive move in the final kilometres. The Poggio is often the last chance for attackers to drop the sprinters before the fast finish in San Remo.
  • Winners: Many cycling legends have won Milan-San Remo, including Eddy Merckx (who holds a record of seven victories), Fausto Coppi, and more recently, riders like Mark Cavendish, Vincenzo Nibali, and Julian Alaphilippe.

Unique Challenges:

  • Length: At nearly 300 km, the race tests riders’ endurance as well as their tactical nous.
  • Unpredictable Weather: Being held in early spring, the weather can vary dramatically from cold rain to bright sun, adding an extra element of unpredictability.

Milan-San Remo is cherished by both riders and fans, offering an iconic combination of long, gruelling distance and an unpredictable, exciting finale. It holds a special place as one of cycling’s five Monuments, alongside races like the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and Il Lombardia.
