Description
A bright second impression of the first UK edition of Asterix in Spain, published by Brockhampton Press in 1971 and part of the important early sequence of British Asterix editions.
Originally published in French as Astérix en Hispanie, the story follows Asterix and Obelix as they become involved with the young son of an Iberian chieftain, taken hostage by the Romans and eventually returned to Spain. The journey allows René Goscinny to explore regional identity, Roman occupation, family loyalty and national stereotypes through the series’ characteristic mixture of satire, wordplay and comic adventure.
This title is especially memorable for its portrayal of Spain and Iberia through a deliberately anachronistic lens. Goscinny uses the ancient setting to parody recognisable aspects of Spanish culture and tourism, while Albert Uderzo’s full-colour artwork gives the book a strong visual identity, particularly in the landscape and travel sequences.
The English translation is by Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge, whose adaptations were central to the success of Asterix in Britain. Their work is notable for its inventive handling of jokes, names, idioms and cultural references, allowing the English-language editions to retain much of the wit and rhythm of the French originals.
The front board shows Asterix and Obelix suspended over the Iberian Peninsula with their young companion, while the rear board carries the familiar Brockhampton design of Asterix following Obelix beneath his menhir, listing earlier British titles.
The copyright page states “First published in Great Britain 1971” and “Second impression 1971”, confirming this as the second impression of the first UK edition. ISBN 0 340 14934 5.
An attractive early British issue of a popular Asterix title, surviving in bright and clean condition.
Condition
Very good. The original pictorial laminated boards are generally bright and clean, with very minor marks and light creasing, together with slight wear to the boards. The binding is tight and firm. Internally, the pages are very nice and clean throughout, with the colour illustrations remaining fresh and bright.
A very good, bright and clean copy.
