Materials and Craftsmanship

He is constructed from light brown mohair which has a slightly wavy texture, giving him a classic teddy bear appearance with depth and warmth in the fur. The mohair is dense and plush, enough to hold its form without being stiff, with a natural lustre that softens in places due to the pile’s movement and brushing. His limbs and head are fully jointed, meaning that arms, legs and the head are independently movable, allowing Jack to assume sitting, standing or more dynamic poses. The stuffing is firm enough to retain shape yet soft to the touch, ensuring he has presence but is still bear-like in haptic qualities. Jack’s face is expressive in a traditional maritime character: his eyes are dark and inset, with a gentle glint that gives him the appearance of wisdom from many voyages. His nose is hand-stitched in black thread with a clean, neat seam. Beneath the nose, the mouth is also stitched, modest in size, conveying gentleness rather than caricature. His ears are medium sized, rounded, sewn on firmly at the sides of his head, neither too flat nor projecting excessively, proportionate to the head size. On his paws, Jack has felt pads which are well shaped. The seams where the joints meet are clean and well hidden in the mohair’s natural flows so that transitions between the body, limbs and head look seamless and balanced.

His outfit reflects a nautical / sea captain’s theme. He wears a red and white striped top beneath a smart navy-blue sailor or captain’s jacket. The jacket is tailored to fit his proportions, with buttons and a collar, and enough structure that it holds its shape rather than flopping. On his head sits a matching captain’s hat, suitably proportioned, finishing off the look of a veteran sea captain.
