A fine and particularly evocative Steiff Teddy Bear Petsy Replica 1928, EAN 403286, issued in 2016 in a worldwide limited edition of only 928 examples.

Petsy was introduced by Steiff in 1928 as a new, more youthful bear design, distinguished by his broad head, large wire-reinforced ears, facial centre seam and tipped mohair. The model became one of the Steiff’s successful inter-war teddy bears and has since been reissued in a a number of replica and commemorative editions.

This 2016 replica was created to reproduce the character of the 1928 Petsy particularly closely. The bear is made from richly textured brown-tipped mohair, with the darker tips giving the coat considerable depth and an intentionally aged appearance. The broad head, rounded ears, short muzzle and large expressive eyes are characteristic of the Petsy design.

The construction is deliberately traditional. Petsy is stuffed with excelsior wood shavings, fitted with blue glass eyes and incorporates a working growler. He is fully jointed at the neck, shoulders and hips and has contrasting felt paw pads. The nose and mouth are hand embroidered.

Steiff also reproduced an important period detail in the form of the patinated steel “underscored Button in Ear”, accompanied by the appropriate historic-style ear label. These details distinguish the replica series from Steiff’s conventional contemporary limited editions and are intended to reflect the appearance of the original inter-war bears.

This example is individually numbered 283 of 928, the edition size itself referencing the year 1928. It retains its original Steiff labels and chest tag and is accompanied by its original Steiff presentation box, numbered certificate and associated paperwork.

An especially attractive Steiff replica for collectors interested in the company’s historic designs, combining the character of an inter-war teddy bear with the security and documentation of a modern limited edition.

Condition

Excellent collectible condition.

The brown-tipped mohair remains full and attractive and retains the intentionally slightly aged appearance characteristic of the model. The blue glass eyes, embroidered facial features and felt paw pads are all very well preserved.

The bear remains fully jointed and the growler is present.

Original Steiff ear label, patinated steel Button in Ear, chest tag and manufacturer’s labels are retained.

Accompanied by the original Steiff presentation box, numbered certificate and paperwork. The box shows only light signs of storage and handling consistent with age.
