A particularly complete example of the Steiff Titanic Centenary Bear, produced in 2012 to commemorate the centenary of the sinking of RMS Titanic on 15 April 1912.

Made exclusively for Danbury Mint, the bear was available only during the centenary year. Steiff deliberately based the design upon the black mourning bears produced by the company in the aftermath of the Titanic disaster, giving this edition considerably greater historical resonance than a conventional commemorative teddy bear.

The bear is made from jet-black genuine mohair and has distinctive dark eyes outlined in red, an intentional detail referring to the tearful appearance associated with Steiff’s original mourning bears. Around his neck is the original red ribbon carrying a gold-plated and enamelled RMS Titanic commemorative medallion.

Also included is the original hand-painted model of RMS Titanic supplied with the bear by Danbury Mint. The accompanying contemporary promotional literature specifically states that the model was included with the bear and measures approximately 11.5 cm in length.

The set retains its original Steiff box, numbered certificate, product information card and Danbury Mint promotional literature, making this a notably complete surviving example.

Condition

Excellent condition. The bear retains its original Steiff button and white ear tag, manufacturer’s card, ribbon and Titanic medallion. The black mohair remains rich in colour and the pads, eyes and facial features present very well.

Complete with original Steiff presentation box, certificate numbered 2303, information card, RMS Titanic model and original Danbury Mint advertising literature. Minor storage wear may be present to the box and paper material consistent with age.
