Steiff – Jocko Chimpanzee – 11 cm – Mohair – c.1965-1990

Description

An original vintage Steiff Jocko chimpanzee, made in Germany in brown mohair and measuring approximately 11 cm from the top of the head to the end of the foot.

This is the small seated Jocko pattern produced in the mid-1960s as Art. No. 5311,03 and subsequently under the later numbering system as Art. No. 0020/11. Tagged examples of the former are documented from 1965–1967, while the later 0020/11 continued the 11 cm form into subsequent decades.

The chimpanzee is made from dark brown mohair with a contrasting peach-coloured felt face, ears, hands and feet. The face is softly modelled with dark eyes, stitched mouth and subtle painted or shaded detailing around the nose and brow.

The head is jointed, allowing it to turn, while the arms and legs are formed with flexible internal construction rather than conventional disc joints. This distinguishes the smaller Jocko from the larger, fully articulated models.

The original Steiff button remains attached to the foot, which is correct for this small pattern. The yellow identification flag is no longer present, so it is not possible to distinguish conclusively between the late 1960s 5311,03 issue and the later 0020/11 production.

A particularly appealing small-format example of one of Steiff’s best-known primate designs, retaining strong colour, expressive facial modelling and the original maker’s button.

Condition

Good vintage condition. The mohair remains generally full and retains good colour, with some localised flattening and light age-related wear. The felt face, ears, hands and feet show minor rubbing, marking and discolouration consistent with handling and age. The eyes are secure. The head joint functions correctly and the flexible limbs retain their form. The original Steiff button remains attached to the foot; the yellow identification flag is absent.
