Product Description

Original wood engraving. Date: c.1540-1552. Latin text within engraved borders verso. First or very early edition. Sheet size: 38.8cm x 30.7cm. Ptolemaic map of ancient Sarmatia located northeast of the Black Sea by the famous mapmaker Sebastian Munster. Mountain ranges dominate the map and three gates are shown in the Caucasus Mountains, which in ancient times used to be a caravan route to the ancient Orient. The Alexandri Columns are shown in present day Georgia. The highly decorative wood engraving to the verso was probably cut by Hans Holbein. Uncoloured, as issued with good, wide margins. In fine, clean condition.
