Terry Pratchett (1948-2015)
Terry Pratchett was an English author best known for his satirical fantasy series, “Discworld,” which comprises over 40 books. Born on April 28, 1948, in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, Pratchett showed an early interest in reading and writing, and published his first short story at the age of 13.
Pratchett’s career began in journalism, but he soon transitioned to writing full-time. His breakthrough came with the publication of “The Colour of Magic” in 1983, the first novel in the Discworld series. The series is set on a flat, disc-shaped world balanced on the backs of four elephants, which stand on the back of a giant turtle. It is celebrated for its humorous take on classic fantasy tropes and insightful commentary on real-world issues.
In addition to Discworld, Pratchett wrote numerous other works, including collaborations with Neil Gaiman on “Good Omens” and with Stephen Baxter on “The Long Earth” series. Pratchett was known for his sharp wit, profound imagination, and the ability to weave complex themes into his narratives.
Pratchett was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease in 2007. Despite his illness, he continued to write, using voice recognition software, and became an advocate for Alzheimer’s research and awareness. He was knighted for his services to literature in 2009.
Pratchett passed away on March 12, 2015, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most beloved and influential fantasy authors of his time. His work continues to inspire readers and writers around the world.
