The Dave Clark Five: A Short Biography

The Dave Clark Five were one of the most popular British beat bands of the 1960s, often seen as rivals to The Beatles during the height of the British Invasion. Formed in 1957 in North London, the group was led by drummer Dave Clark, who played a significant role not only in shaping the band’s sound but also in managing the group and controlling much of their artistic output—a rarity for musicians at the time.

Line-up and Sound

The classic line-up of The Dave Clark Five included:

  • Dave Clark on drums and backing vocals
  • Mike Smith as lead vocalist and keyboard player
  • Lenny Davidson on lead guitar and backing vocals
  • Rick Huxley on bass guitar
  • Denis Payton on saxophone, harmonica, and occasional guitar

Their sound was distinctive, combining a heavy beat with harmonised vocals and prominent saxophone lines, which set them apart from many of their contemporaries. Dave Clark’s drumming style was energetic and forefront in their arrangements, reflecting his focus on the beat. Mike Smith’s strong, soulful voice added a rich intensity to their songs, giving them a somewhat raw and powerful feel compared to other bands in the British Invasion scene.

Career Highlights

The Dave Clark Five’s breakout hit was Glad All Over (1963), which famously knocked The Beatles’ I Want to Hold Your Hand off the top of the UK Singles Chart in early 1964. They became the second British group to perform on The Ed Sullivan Show in the United States, following The Beatles, which propelled their popularity further.

Throughout the mid-1960s, the band scored multiple hit singles in both the UK and the US, including songs like Bits and Pieces, Because, Catch Us If You Can, and Over and Over. Their music appealed strongly to the youth of the time, with its infectious energy and rhythmic drive.

Film and Television

In 1965, The Dave Clark Five starred in a feature film called Catch Us If You Can (released as Having a Wild Weekend in the United States). Directed by John Boorman, the film provided a somewhat surrealistic and artful look at celebrity culture and youth, though it was less commercially successful than The Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night. Nevertheless, it showcased their music and further solidified their image as cultural icons of the 1960s.

The Dave Clark Five also made regular appearances on television programmes, and their polished, high-energy live performances helped maintain their popularity, even as the British Invasion landscape grew more competitive.

Legacy and Influence

The band’s success was somewhat unique in that Dave Clark maintained control over the rights to their recordings, which limited the availability of their music for reissues over the years. This, along with the group’s limited reunion activity and Dave Clark’s reluctance to revisit the past extensively, contributed to their lower visibility in later years. Nevertheless, their influence endures, and they are credited with helping to pave the way for British bands in America.

In 2008, The Dave Clark Five were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, recognising their contributions to rock music and their significant impact during the British Invasion. Their combination of catchy melodies, driving beats, and the powerful presence of Mike Smith’s voice has left a lasting legacy on the music of the 1960s and beyond.
