The Exploits of Sherlock Holmes – First UK Edition – 1954

London: John Murray, 1954. First UK edition, first printing. Octavo. Original red cloth, lettered in gilt to spine, in the original pictorial dustwrapper.

A highly attractive copy of one of the most celebrated post-canonical Sherlock Holmes collections, bringing together the son of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the great Golden Age detective novelist John Dickson Carr. Conceived as a continuation of the Holmes saga, the volume expands upon the tantalising “untold cases” briefly mentioned by Dr Watson throughout the original canon, transforming scattered references into fully realised adventures in the authentic Holmesian tradition.

The collaboration is a fascinating literary meeting of worlds. Adrian Conan Doyle brought an intimate knowledge of his father’s methods, notes and unpublished ideas, while Carr — widely regarded as one of the greatest detective writers of the twentieth century — supplied the intricate plotting and atmospheric mystery for which he was renowned. The result is widely considered the finest Sherlock Holmes pastiche of the modern era and remains highly regarded among collectors and Holmes scholars alike.

The twelve stories include interpretations of such legendary unwritten cases as The Adventure of the Wax Gamblers, The Adventure of the Black Baronet, The Adventure of the Abbas Ruby, and The Adventure of the Deptford Horror. Carr’s influence is particularly evident in the locked-room ingenuity and gothic atmosphere that distinguish several of the tales, while the narrative voice successfully recreates the cadence and charm of Watson’s original chronicles.

An especially desirable example in the vivid and striking dustwrapper, featuring a dramatic period illustration of Holmes amid scenes of menace and intrigue. The jacket design has become iconic among mid-century detective fiction and is increasingly difficult to find in such well-preserved condition.

Cloth clean with a little dulling to the spine gilt and minor creasing. Top edge slightly spotted. No inscriptions. Internally clean throughout. The dustwrapper, which is correctly priced 12s 6d net, is bright and un-faded with only light rubbing and minor wear at extremities; spine panel fresh and strong. A very good plus copy in a near fine dust jacket.
