Product Description
The Hong Kong Cricket Tour of England, July 1976 – Official Tour Programme with Original Printed Itinerary
Description
An original official programme produced for The Hong Kong Cricket Tour of England, held during July 1976, documenting a landmark occasion in the development of Hong Kong cricket. Published by the Hong Kong Cricket League, this illustrated 72-page programme was issued to accompany the first official cricket tour from Hong Kong to England, the spiritual home of the game.
The tour represented a significant milestone for Hong Kong cricket. During the post-war decades the territory developed a thriving domestic cricket scene, drawing together players from diverse Commonwealth backgrounds. By the mid-1970s the standard of cricket had risen sufficiently for an ambitious tour of England to be organised, allowing the Hong Kong side to compete against a varied programme of county, club and representative opposition.
Illustrated throughout, the programme introduces the touring party and records an important chapter in the history of Hong Kong cricket. Particularly desirable is the survival of the original printed itinerary, loosely inserted, detailing the team’s schedule throughout England. The itinerary includes fixtures against Old Hong Kong at Aldershot, the Army, Lloyds, the RAF, MCC at Lord’s, Wiltshire Pilgrims, Coventry & North Warwickshire Cricket Club, Wolverhampton Cricket Club and numerous other representative and club sides. Such ephemeral inserts were intended for use during the tour and are frequently absent from surviving copies.
As both an official souvenir and an important documentary record of Hong Kong’s first cricket tour to England, the programme offers considerable interest to collectors of cricket history, Hong Kong sporting memorabilia and Commonwealth sporting publications.
