Historical Context: Situated on the Charlton Downs, Goodwood held one of the most delightful situations for a race meeting. The construction of the course was unusual with its outline taking a left and right-handed direction. Racing began at Goodwood in 1802, with the first Goodwood stakes being in 1823. The chalk subsoil provides unsurpassed at any other course in the British Isles for racing in all weathers. The running ground in extent was just over two miles and racing held over various distances with the gallop considered everything that one could desire.
