Despite sharing no family connection, the two present themselves as if cut from the same cloth, dressing in bowler hats, dark suits and carrying walking sticks. Their speech is filled with polite, old-fashioned turns of phrase, often peppered with the amusing refrain of correcting one another with lines such as, “To be precise…” or “As you were saying…” — even when both are wrong.

Professionally, they are detectives, though their ability to detect is highly questionable. Their investigations are characterised by misunderstanding, misidentification, and a near-total failure to grasp the situation at hand. They regularly arrest the wrong person, follow false leads with absolute conviction, and get themselves into scrapes that require others —usually Tintin — to rescue them. Yet, for all their blunders, Thomson and Thompson are deeply likeable. They are never malicious, never cynical. They mean well, and their good intentions, combined with a certain unshakeable dignity, make their errors more endearing than frustrating. Their loyalty to Tintin is unwavering, and they are always ready — however clumsily — to lend their support when adventure calls. Physically, they are the classic comic double act. Their movements are often synchronised, their pratfalls perfectly timed. Whether it’s being thrown off a camel, disguising themselves in absurd costumes, or being caught in the chaos of a foreign bureaucracy, the pair are reliably entertaining. They bring a touch of slapstick to otherwise tense plots, offering a lightness of tone that keeps the stories from becoming too severe.

In essence, Thomson and Thompson are the embodiment of well-meaning British bumbling—courteous, confused, and utterly convinced of their own competence. While they may never solve the case, the world of Tintin would be far poorer without them.
