It is suggested that Queen Anne first proposed that a horse racing course be constructed on the demesne of Royal Ascot Heath in 1711. The number of race days continued to expand, and in 1828 King George IV established the Royal Procession. Royal interest has remained a major influence in Ascot racecourse, and diligent improvements ensured that by 1902 it was in splendid condition and would be one of the best gallops in existence. With notable races throughout the year, including flat races, steeplechases, and hurdling, it is a premier racing destination, with Royal Ascot remaining Britain’s most valuable race meeting.

Edition of 95, numbered in pencil to the margin. Blind-embossed stamp of The Hannibal Press. Horse racing has taken place in Ripon since 1664 at a number of different venues. Ripon was also the location of the first horse race exclusively for lady riders. The racecourse has been at its current location on Boroughbridge Road since 1900, and this map was first produced in 1903. The course stands 100 feet above sea level with a right-handed running line. It is one mile and three quarters in circumference with two turns in its outline. A road intercepts the course at the turn, and another crosses the going between the one and a half and the one and a quarter miles. All the races start on a straight line from the ‘gate’ except the one and a half miles, which is just on the top turn. There is a rattling good gallop on the far side for half a mile.

It is considered safe to assume that this district is the birthplace of steeplechasing, with records dating back to the time of the Norman Conquest. The Liverpool races commenced at Maghull in 1827, from which the present venue at Aintree originated. The Grand Stand was completed in 1830, and in 1839 ‘Lottery’ became the first winner of the ‘Grand Liverpool Steeplechase,’ a race that would become known as ‘The Grand National.’ The distance was 4 miles 856 yards, which necessitated two complete circuits of the course, with the exception of the water jump and the formidable fence preceding it. ‘Becher’s Brook’ and ‘Valentine’s Brook’ were also highly difficult and demanding. Horse racing throughout the world is steeped in the history of this Grand National race, and it remains of the highest importance in the horse-racing calendar.
