Description

A Winter’s Catch is a beautifully composed original screenprint by the British artist and illustrator Al Heighton, whose distinctive work combines bold graphic design, imaginative storytelling, playful characterisation and an affectionate appreciation of the natural world.

Depicting two anglers beside a winding river surrounded by winter trees, birds and woodland animals, the composition captures the quiet pleasures of fishing and the distinctive atmosphere of the British countryside during the colder months. Rendered in a carefully balanced palette of deep blue, pale grey, orange, green, red and black against a predominantly white background, the image demonstrates Heighton’s characteristic ability to transform familiar subjects into imaginative and visually engaging compositions.

The screenprint is signed and numbered 11/50 in pencil by the artist, forming part of a limited edition of just fifty impressions.

Wildlife and Decorative Detail

One of the most engaging features of A Winter’s Catch is the extraordinary variety of small details incorporated into the composition.

The orange fox, running hares and procession of birds introduce a lively sense of movement across the foreground. Their simplified silhouettes contrast with the delicate linear treatment of the surrounding plants and grasses. The bare trees are decorated with small coloured forms, creating a visual rhythm that echoes the scattered stars and decorative motifs of the sky. The winding river is similarly stylised, its broad areas of blue punctuated by delicate marks suggesting ripples and movement.

These details demonstrate Heighton’s ability to construct a complex visual narrative from relatively simple graphic elements. Although the composition contains numerous figures, animals and decorative motifs, the careful arrangement of these elements prevents the image from becoming overcrowded. The generous white space surrounding the landscape allows the individual components to remain clearly defined.

The result is an artwork that rewards close examination while retaining an immediate and engaging visual impact.
