About Al Heighton

Al Heighton is a British illustrator, artist and printmaker based in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. He studied Graphic Design at the University of Salford, graduating in 2001 with a First Class Honours degree, before establishing a successful career in professional illustration. His work is characterised by confident line drawing, bold colour combinations, imaginative characters and an engaging sense of visual storytelling.

Drawing inspiration from everyday life, popular culture, sport and human relationships, Heighton creates compositions that are immediately accessible yet frequently contain unexpected details and subtle humour. His distinctive style incorporates elements of cartooning, decorative illustration and contemporary graphic design. Heighton has produced illustrations for a wide range of editorial, publishing, commercial and cultural clients, including The Guardian, the Financial Times, Random House, Marks & Spencer, Pentagram and Arctic Monkeys. Alongside his commercial illustration, he produces original prints that allow his individual artistic imagination to develop beyond the requirements of commissioned work. His independent printmaking has established a distinctive body of work characterised by humour, colour and imaginative storytelling.
