Description

Teeing Off is a wonderfully imaginative original screenprint by the British artist and illustrator Al Heighton, whose distinctive work combines bold graphic design, playful characterisation and an unmistakable sense of humour. Depicting an eccentric gathering of golfers surrounded by stylised trees, birds and delicate vegetation, the composition offers a charming and entertaining interpretation of one of Britain’s most enduring sporting traditions. Rendered in a carefully controlled palette of lime green, yellow, pale blue, grey and black against a predominantly white background, the image demonstrates Heighton’s characteristic ability to transform familiar sporting subjects into imaginative and visually engaging compositions.

Golf, Tradition and the Art of Sporting Illustration

Golf has inspired artists and illustrators for centuries, from early sporting prints depicting celebrated players and historic courses to contemporary interpretations of the game’s culture and traditions. The sport’s characteristic clothing, equipment, gestures and social rituals provide a particularly rich source of visual inspiration.

Heighton’s approach is refreshingly unconventional. Rather than concentrating upon a famous golfer, championship or particular course, he explores the wider culture of the game through a collection of imagined characters. The golfers’ elaborate costumes recall the traditional fashions associated with the sport, while their exaggerated movements introduce a theatrical quality. The composition celebrates the enjoyment and companionship of golf, but also gently acknowledges its eccentricities.

This affectionate humour is central to Heighton’s artistic style. His figures are recognisable as golfers, yet their simplified forms, expressive gestures and unusual proportions transform the scene into something far removed from conventional sporting illustration. Teeing Off consequently appeals both as a celebration of golf and as an independent example of contemporary British graphic art.
