Product Description
ALMORA GUIDE MAP – Survey of India – First Edition – 1973
Original large-format Survey of India folding guide map of Almora, issued at a scale of 1:10,000. First edition, 1973. Printed pictorial wrappers with decorative border, Survey of India device, and photographic panoramic view of Almora to the upper cover. Price printed as seven rupees fifty paise.
A scarce official guide map of Almora, one of the principal hill towns of the Kumaon region, produced by the Survey of India during the early 1970s. The map records Almora at a highly detailed urban and topographical scale, showing roads, paths, buildings, contours, forested areas, public offices, educational institutions, banks, shopping centres, tourist facilities, government buildings, and other places of local interest.
Particularly notable is the inclusion of a panoramic profile titled “The Snows from Kasar Devi,” identifying Himalayan peaks visible from the Almora region, including Nanda Devi and other major summits. This feature gives the map additional topographical and touristic interest, linking the town’s urban geography with its celebrated mountain setting.
The map also includes a detailed printed index of places of interest, including banks, educational establishments, hotels, hospitals, offices, places of worship, shopping centres and localities. Such guide maps were practical publications intended for visitors, administrators and residents, and were often heavily used, folded, damaged or discarded.
The title panel refers to the map as “Almora Guide Map, First Edition 1973,” and records Survey of India compilation and copyright details. Large unfolded sheet size approximately 101.6 x 83.6 cm.
Condition: Original printed wrappers present. Folding map complete, with expected fold lines, light creasing, minor handling wear, and some wear to the covers and extremities consistent with practical use. Overall a very good plus and complete example of a scarce official Survey of India town guide map.
No institutional copy of this precise 1973 first edition has been traced in the British Library, Library Hub Discover, or WorldCat databases. The map therefore appears to be apparently unrecorded institutionally.
A scarce and attractive official Survey of India map of Almora, with appeal to collectors of Indian cartography, Himalayan travel, Kumaon history, post-Independence urban mapping, and twentieth-century Survey of India publications.
