Associated Press Press Photograph – “Vietnamese Girl Clings to Her Doll” – South Vietnam Refugee Child – March 1975
An original Associated Press press photograph issued from London for publication on 4 March 1975, depicting a young South Vietnamese girl holding tightly to her doll as fighting intensified during the final months of the Vietnam War.
The original Associated Press caption, affixed to the reverse, explains that the child may have been forced to leave her home with her family because of fighting near Saigon. The caption further notes that she had been living in the area around Hoài Đức, approximately seventy-five miles from the capital, where many inhabitants had been fleeing to safer ground.
The photograph is a poignant example of late Vietnam War photojournalism, documenting the human consequences of a conflict that by early 1975 was entering its final and most dramatic phase. Rather than depicting combat itself, the image focuses on the civilian experience of war and displacement. The child’s doll becomes a powerful visual symbol of normality, security and childhood amidst uncertainty and upheaval.
Issued by Associated Press and distributed internationally through the agency’s news network, the photograph formed part of the visual reporting that informed newspaper readers around the world about conditions in South Vietnam during the months immediately preceding the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975.
The photographer is not identified on the reverse. The photograph originates from the photographic archive of the Shields Gazette and retains the newspaper’s archive stamp and filing marks, providing excellent provenance and confirming its use within a working British newspaper archive.
Photographs documenting refugees, civilians and children during the closing stages of the Vietnam War are increasingly sought after by collectors of military history, humanitarian history, photojournalism and twentieth-century documentary photography. This image is particularly effective for its emotional immediacy and strong visual composition.
